CEO – JOE NICOLO
Co-CEO of Revel Music Group, Joe “The Butcher” Nicolo, is a 9 time Grammy award-winning producer and record label owner. He was the founder/co-owner of Ruffhouse Records which sold over 100 million records and garnered nine Grammy awards before being bought by Sony Music in 2000. He found and released such iconic artists as Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Wyclef Jean, Kris Kross, Nas, and DMX. He created the legendary Studio 4 in Philadelphia, where he honed his skills in recording, mixing, and producing. It was during this time that he earned the nickname “The Butcher” for his skillfulness at being able to piece together and mix tracks. A few local artists that recorded their early albums at Studio 4 with Joe include Boyz II Men and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Will Smith). Joe discovered Will Smith and produced his first album, the Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince album, “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper” which went on to win the first Rap Grammy award. His success with these artists resulted in Joe becoming staff producer for Columbia Records. During his ten-year tenure, he produced some of the most successful recording artists in the industry including The Rolling Stones, Will Smith, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, Luther Vandross, The Police, 311, and countless others. Joe produced James Taylor’s “Hourglass” album, which won a Grammy in 1999. He was also nominated for a Grammy for his production of Billy Joel’s album “River of Dreams”. Joe has also produced a number of feature films with Feverpitch Pictures and Kindred Media Group. Joe has also served as Music Supervisor on films including “Shade”, “Zebrahead”, and “Juice”, the classic hip-hop film starring Tupac Shakur, Queen Latifah, and Samuel L. Jackson. In April 2003, Joe was honored by the Philadelphia Chapter of National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammys) by being awarded the Heroes Award as recognition of his outstanding work and contributions to the U.S. music industry on both a national and local level.
